Thursday we went to downtown Cape Town to go to Greenmarket Square which is an open market where very traditional African type items are sold. We saw lots and lots of wood carvings and beaded jewelry there. It was quite an experience. Once we would look for more than a minute at anything, the vendor would come and have us offer an amount for the items. I was ill prepared, not having much cash with me, and so I didn’t buy anything. It was kind of humorous as the vendor would tell me to make an offer and I would tell him I couldn’t because it would insult him. He would then insist at which point I told him I only had 30 Rand. That actually ended up being quite effective. Each time they would smile at me and agree that it was too little.
Here are some pictures from around the area we were in. The buildings were painted in bright colors that brought a smile to my face.
We saw a restaurant, the African Cafe that we considered eating at. The inside was super cool, and this bird chandelier was suspended in the entryway. (We didn’t end up eating there because it was a HUGE meal with a whole bunch of items and we weren’t hungry enough to justify the high cost) .
Kind of makes Fairfield, Ct seem quite bland. I think I prefer the colorful buildings.
I’m glad you and Meg made it – what a wonderful time. Safe travels home. May God continue to bless in you and all at the conference for what you each experienced there.
